What is this

The State Forest Register is a state-maintained forest inventory database in which every forest is divided into stands — homogeneous areas with their own species composition, age and growing conditions. We have put this data on the map and linked it to every land parcel, so you can examine the forest exactly where you look up the property.

Each stand shows the dominant species and the composition formula (for example 8P2B — eight parts pine, two parts birch), age, height, diameter, forest type and restrictions on forestry activity — for example, whether clear-cutting or final felling is prohibited in that spot.

The property card sums it all up: how many hectares of forest, the breakdown by species, how much is ready for felling and the approximate timber stock.

What is a forest stand?
A stand is the smallest forest inventory unit — a homogeneous area of forest with the same species composition, age and growing conditions. One property usually consists of several stands.
What does the composition formula 8P2B mean?
It shows the proportion of species in the stand: eight parts out of ten are pine, two are birch. The first species in the formula is the dominant one.
Are private forests visible on the map too?
Yes. The State Forest Register covers all of Latvia's forests — state, municipal and private. The property card also shows which of these groups the forest belongs to.
How accurate is the stock data?
The stock is not published in the data — we calculate it from inventory figures (basal area, height, species). It is an indicative estimate, not a measurement, and must not be used for legal or financial purposes.
How old is the data?
A forest inventory is valid for 20 years, and data on a particular stand may have been collected many years ago. That is why we also show the inventory year for every stand, and warn in the property card if it is more than 20 years old.
Does the map show what is allowed in the forest?
Partly. We show the restrictions on forestry activity recorded in the State Forest Register — for example a prohibited clear-cut or final felling. Specific felling rights are confirmed by the State Forest Service.
